Custom Cabinets & Woodworking for your Nashville area home

As a professional bathroom remodeling company serving Nashville and surrounding areas we are often asked what, out of the many bathroom remodeling services we offer, is our favorite thing to do; and I would have to say it is our custom woodworking services. While many of the things that we do offer creative opportunities, custom woodworking for Nashville and surrounding area homes allows us to think outside the box in order to bring a creation from paper to perfection.

Custom vs. pre-made

Over the years it seems that we’ve become such a prepackaged society. Our fast food is pre-packaged, entire neighborhoods being built with cookie-cutter homes; furniture, cabinets and fixtures are all pre-designed, pre-assembled to standard colors and sizes. With this much pre-made madness some might say that custom woodworking in Nashville and surrounding areas is a dying art; I disagree. If anything, it makes the comparison and value of custom woodworking that much more special.

When a visitor to your Nashville home walks into a room where Bathrooms and More has crafted a custom cabinet, vanity or shelving, their eyes are immediately drawn to the custom woodworking. For those Nashville homes where we’ve had the opportunity to design and create custom trim, built-in cabinetry, rollouts and wainscoting; the house takes on a level of elegance and personality that turns a cookie-cutter house into a one-of-a-kind home.

Thinking Outside the Box

Custom woodworking in the Nashville area is, often times, the best solution when trying to get the most usable space out of a room. For example, a renovated third floor with angled walls is nearly impossible to try to find a store-bought cabinet that will work without creating wasted space; however, a custom woodworking project would be able to measure, design and create a cabinet storage area that utilizes all of the available space, getting the most use out of the area. Custom woodworking often challenges us to think outside the box to look for solutions that would meet each individual need and expectation.

Merging the Old with the New

One of the areas that Bathrooms and More in the Nashville area excels is taking antique fixtures, such as an antique vanity or dresser, and retool or re-engineer it to work in a modern environment. This level of custom woodworking takes a steady hand with a well designed plan as this “zero-tolerance” project is crafted.

Many antique pieces are unusable in their current state and even restored may not have the structural integrity to be used as a daily component; however, when we repurpose antiques to function in a modern roll it brings the satisfaction of a custom woodworking project all the more enjoyable.

While we have the expertise in all areas of home improvement we specialize in bathroom remodeling, interior & exterior painting and custom woodworking. Professional Painting Tips

You can’t become Nashville’s premier bathroom remodeling, painting and more company without developing some tricks of the trade… It doesn’t matter what the home-improvement commercials say, just buying professional grade products does not make a professional outcome.

Bathrooms and More, providing professional paint surfaces to the Nashville area, has earned the reputation for not only using professional grade products, but professional grade people as well. For those that wish to try their hand at painting we would like to give you a few useful tips to help you out with your home painting project in Nashville.

Purchase Quality Materials

The reason for painting your bathroom sometimes can determine how much you’re going to spend on paint and materials. If you’re painting your bathroom for a house that you’re going to sell, you’re going to be less motivated to purchase top quality paint products; however for those that are going to keep their home for a while or want to have the quality colors that stand out, you need to make sure that you purchase quality paint and materials.

While the big-box stores might have the best advertised price, they may not necessarily have the best quality materials for those that are wanting to do the job right. If your area is fortunate to have a paint retail store such as Porter Paints, we recommend using them. You might spend a few more dollars here and there on paint and materials but the final result will be a paint that matches the surface that you are painting, as well as, the quality that will keep you from needing the do the job with multiple coats.

Professionals such as Bathrooms and More knows that choosing the best quality materials will not only provide you with a better result, but will last for many years to come.

Take Time to Prep the Walls

Daddy used to always say “there is never enough time to do it right, but there always seems to be enough time to do it over” … meaning that you should take your time and do it right the first time.

  • Clean your walls, ceilings, trim, windows, window trim and baseboards before you begin. Paint doesn’t apply very well to dirty surfaces so take some time to clean your surfaces with soap and water and let air dry overnight prior to beginning.

  • Fill in holes with spackle and sand as needed to make sure that there are no imperfections in the surface. When sanding, use a high grit paper as to not damage the drywall. Even with good quality paint, cracks and holes still show. Some paints may require primer so that it keeps the color of the paint that you chose consistent and vibrant, especially on darker walls.

  • Some surfaces, such as concrete, may require an additional product to make the walls receive paint more easily. Be sure to research this aspect fully before you put your first coat of paint on a concrete wall.

  • Take the time to mask off the areas that you don’t want painted, remove light covers and socket covers rather than taping them and tape the fixture instead. Avoid using plastic to cover the floors when you’re painting. This can become slippery easily. We recommend to use drop cloths.

Painting Ceilings

Ceilings can be a little tricky as in some areas it is popular to have a textured ceiling. When painting a textured ceiling make sure to use a thick nap roller so that it covers the irregularities of the textured ceiling. Using a thicker paint specifically made for ceilings will make your life a lot easier as the thinner paints tend to drip, making quite a mess of things.

Time Saving Tips

  • There is a product on the market that is a real time saver, it is a paint edger that has two nylon wheels on the side so you can avoid having to tape certain areas, like trim and baseboards.

  • Use a 2” angle brush for corners to avoid scraping the edges, use a steady hand and make sure you go back over to get rid of any excess buildup.

  • Unless you’re using multiple people, skip the paint trays and use a 5 gallon bucket with a roller screen.

  • For gallon buckets of paint, take a finishing nail and poke a few holes into the crevices that the lid snaps into, this will allow the paint to drip back down inside instead of splattering when you put the lid back on.

When Experience Counts

Bathrooms and More provides bathroom remodeling services for Nashville and surrounding areas. We have earned a reputation for high quality workmanship and customer service. Before you spend too much time buying materials and getting ready to paint, give us a call and provide you with a free quote for painting. Reasons to Choose a Professional Bathroom Remodel

So you have decided to do some home improvement projects, great! When it comes to home improvement projects in the Nashville area one of the first rooms homeowners will consider upgrading is the bathroom.

Whether you are planning on staying in your home for many years to come or looking for ways to better the value of the home for resale, a bathroom remodeling project is the perfect place to start. Updating or remodeling your bathroom can help with storage, energy efficiency, modernizing the appearance and more. Whether the common bathroom or the master bathroom, a remodeling project provides many benefits for your family and your guests.

A leap of faith

With so many bathroom remodeling companies serving the Nashville area, many consider a remodeling project a leap of faith: Who can I trust? What kind of reputation do they have? Will they finish what they started? These questions and more flood through a homeowner’s mind when choosing a trusted bathroom remodeling company to come into their home.

To make it easier to choose the right bathroom remodeling company for your Nashville area home, here are a few questions to ask:

  • Does the owner personally write all estimates rather than a salesman working on commission?
  • Are they Locally Owned and Operated in the Nashville area?
  • Do they provide a warranty on labor and materials?
  • Do they have in in-house design capabilities?
  • Are they fully licensed, bonded and insured?
  • Do they only use only top products from name brand manufactures with identifiable warranties?

The answers to these questions will help you decide if the bathroom remodeling service you allow into your home will provide you with the products and services you need for your Nashville area home.

Some Big Reasons to Choose to Remodel your Bathroom

As mentioned above there are many reasons to remodel your bathroom in the Nashville area but over the years we have found four main reasons why our customers have chosen to have their bathroom remodeled.

Increasing the Value of the Home

Let’s face it, there is much debate in the bathroom remodeling industry as to whether a bathroom update really does increase the value of the home. While some estimators will say that if the bathroom is intact and functioning it equates the same value as a fully remodeled bathroom, the actual sales numbers do not support that opinion. Sources such as the 2013 edition of remodeling magazine discovered that homeowners that have an updated, modernize bathroom found that they were able to recoup 54% through 65% of their investment. While they were not able to tack on 100% of the value of their upgrade, it did bring the total value of the home of proportionately as well.

Home Buyers Look for Remodeled Bathrooms

Just like when buying a used car, it comes down to mileage and options. If there are two or three homes for sale in the same area in Nashville, the one that has the newest and most modern features will generally get the sale every time. A proper bathroom remodeling project can really put the wow factor in any home as it is also one of the first places that a potential home buyer will look.

Energy Efficiency

With the bathroom being one of the most used rooms in the home energy efficiency becomes a big deal. Part of any professional bathroom remodeling project should include the updating of the lighting and plumbing fixtures. The Environmental Protection Agency has calculated that if 1 in 10 homes have a bathroom remodeling project completed to include energy efficient fixtures that it would save 70 billion gallons of water and $1.5 billion worth of energy costs!

Better Organization

Not only does the bathroom “date” the home but it can also contribute to clutter and storage issues. Bathrooms built 15 to 30 years ago commonly leaned more attention to colors than it did convenience. Part of any bathroom remodeling upgrade should be a well thought out plan for proper storage to help decrease clutter and increase efficiency of the bathroom. Be sure to talk to your home improvement specialist at Bathrooms and More in Nashville about clever ways to design a bathroom that will provide ample storage to decrease clutter.

Wallpaper Removal Tips

Sometimes, as part of prepping a wall for professional paint, is the need for removing wallpaper. While wallpaper can bring that traditional/colonial look to a Nashville area home it can also give the home a dated look, locking you into a particular decorative theme. For this reason many choose to change from wallpaper to paint. As Bathrooms and More offers professional interior painting services we are often called upon to remove wallpaper as part of proper preparation for painting.

Below are some useful tips to help you remove wallpaper from in the walls in your Nashville home.

Consider Hiring a Professional

While we’re going to cover some tips in this article that’ll help you remove wallpaper, there are so many different variables that are involved with this large of a project. Even the box stores websites have pages and pages of instructions on different types of wallpaper, different surfaces the paper is attached to, dealing with multiple layers of paper removal, discovery of wall damage and more.

Often times, when dealing with wallpaper removal, you don’t know how large of a problem you have until you actually get into it, by then you’ve got half your wall torn apart. Bathrooms and More can provide an estimate to remove the old wallpaper as part of its professional prep for interior painting services; as well as, reasonable estimates to repair any damage that is discovered during the removal.

Note: We do not provide wallpaper removal independently from interior painting services. The only way that we can guarantee our workmanship is if we are part of the final product.

Get to Know your Wall

Plaster is commonly found in homes that are over 50 years old in Nashville, this material is known for its dull sound if you knock on it because of its thick construction material made up of lime or gypsum. Added on location to a wooden frame, this traditional construction method is known for imperfections, which made wallpaper a common covering to help hide the blemishes.

For plaster, use steam to help the glue release the paper from the wall. Steam is effective but tricky as that you have to peel and steam at the same time. Commercial grade steam machines can be very heavy and cumbersome, make sure you have enough help to get the job done correctly. Keep in mind that the glue is very sticky, so make precautions to properly cover your furniture and floors to protect against glue residue.

Drywall is generally used for houses that are less than 50 years old. Drywall is made of a chalk like substance covered with a lightweight cardboard/paper. It has more of a hollow sound if you knock on it. These boards are attached to a wooden or aluminum frame with screws or nails (screws are more common). The drywall is then painted or, depending on the style of the home, hardcoated and textured.

Removal of wallpaper from drywall can be a very tedious project needing a lot of trial and error in some cases. Because of the cardboard that drywall uses, wallpaper removal with water or chemicals can quickly damage the drywall. Using steam can be effective depending on the amount of glue that was used to adhere the wallpaper.

Wood walls are rare, but have been used in older Nashville homes. Sometimes these are thin wooden sheets or wainscoting that have been covered by wallpaper. Depending on the extent of the wallpaper removal project; careful examination of the wooden panels may help determine whether replacement of the panels with drywall or restoration of the wainscoting might be preferred. Removal techniques for wood walls will vary depending on the type of wood and whether it has been treated with any coating.

What type of wallpaper is on the walls?

There are many types of wallpaper that is been used in Nashville homes over the years. Just like walls, age helps determine what type of paper and application technique that might have been used. Older homes used a glue that was brushed on with wallpaper applied either in strips or sheets. The wallpaper was a made from a variety of different materials based on the look the homeowner was going for.

Newer homes that utilize wallpaper are generally a self-adhesive type of paper that was easy to apply and easier to remove. (Usually this type of wallpaper can be removed with water saturation. Be mindful of the construction of the wall as to not cause damage to the wall.) Wallpaper found in kitchens and bathrooms can often be the washable type of wallpaper.

While this makes the surface easier to clean, it also makes it more difficult to remove. To determine whether you have a washable wallpaper look for a shiny texture to the paper.

Wallpaper Removal Tips

Now that we’ve discussed the types of walls, types of paper and concerns for each let’s talk about some general tips for wallpaper removal.

First divide your wallpaper into sections. Take a razor knife and lightly score the wall into smaller sections to make it easier to work with. Nothing’s worse than having large strips of paper laying all over that you step on or gets onto your furniture.

Next grab a corner of the paper to remove and begin to pull laying the paper as close to itself as possible when pulling. As you are pulling use your hands to further the expanse trying to pull that paper section off as a complete section. If it begins to tear, stop! Try to grab the next edge and pull until you have moved beyond the tear. (Use caution during removal that if you see that the removal of the wallpaper is damaging the material of the wall stop to consider your removal options)

If the wallpaper is being a little stubborn use a razor knife to help separate the paper from the wall. For drywall, remember to use caution as to not pull the drywall material off with the wallpaper.

If the wallpaper is not the type that is a self-adhesive, easily removable wallpaper then a liquid stripper concentrate will be needed. Mix the concentrate with hot water following the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply using a sprayer to soak the wallpaper in small sections so as to not give time for the wallpaper to dry. Again, remember the type of wall material that you have! If you soak the wall too much it can easily cause damage to the wall which could turn into and expensive repair.

For those other types of wallpaper the need steam removal, the instructions will vary based upon the manufacturer specifications of the equipment. Smaller handheld steamers can sometimes do the job if you cut small holes in the wallpaper so that the steam can get behind the paper. Use extreme caution when dealing with steam, it can quickly burn you and damage the walls with direct contact. Be sure to use the proper safety equipment such as goggles and gloves.
